Are you suffering from a slow wireless connection? Maybe you’re paying for 50 Mbps internet speed but your actual speed comes out closer to 5 Mbps. Before you blame your Internet Service Provider, you should check your settings on your router.
An easy way to fix one of the most common Wi-Fi speed problems: Poor channel selection.
Wireless signals travel in waves on different channels in the air. If there are multiple signals in your area that use the same channel, they can interfere with each other. This causes data to be lost so the waves have to be rebroadcast, which is why your speed drops.
If you live near other routers – such as in an apartment building or a crowded neighborhood – then there’s a good chance your slow Wi-Fi speeds are due to channel interference.
This is why you should download and run a program called Wi-Fi Analyzer (available on Windows and Android but not iOS), and this will tell you which channels are being used.
Run the app and let it analyze your network. Look to see if your wireless network is on a crowded channel. Look at the other channels and note which is least used. Consider Wi-Fi Analyzer’s recommended channel and switch your router to that channel. This should help you to improve your wireless speed.
There are other ways to boost your Wi-Fi speeds, such as changing up the location of your router and learning to use some of the more advanced features. But channel switching is an easy thing to try and offers good results.
